Bordering a vast swathe of forest land on the foothills of the Deomali on the Eastern Ghats, Maa Sarala Plantation is a small coffee farm owned and managed by sexagenarian Sricharan Padhiary. Originally the plantation was meant to be developed for Eucalyptus cultivation but a chance visit to the local Coffee Board office piqued Mr. Padhiary’s interest in coffee farming. Developing the coffee plantation would soon become a consuming obsession with peak annual production touching over 4 MTs. A life-threatening kidney transplant and the ensuing recovery process led to the plantation remaining in a state of semi-abandonment for over 10 years. The farm also suffered the devastating effect of Cyclone Hudhud in 2014 that uprooted over 150 shade trees and caused extensive damage to the coffee plants.
Since 2018, Mr. Padhiary has been steadily and dedicatedly working towards reviving the farm and regaining its lost glory and the efforts are showing. Coffee from this plantation has been among the best cupped from the region for two successive years. The coffees being offered as Koraput Coffee in the CCD Live counters at select Café Coffee Day outlets across the country traces its origin to this plantation!
