What started out as a post-retirement nature retreat is now a lush green coffee farm intercropped with a variety of spices (pepper, cinnamon, bay leaf, ginger), plants (lemon, tamarind) and fruits (jamun, guava, jackfruit, bananas, orange, custard apple). The plantation is the labour of love of Mrs. T. Nirmala Reddy, a now septuagenarian, who has tenaciously nurtured the plantation since establishing it with her husband in the mid 1990s. The plantation was severely crippled in 2014 by the untimely demise of her husband followed by the devastating effect of Cyclone Hudhud, which uprooted many shade trees and caused extensive damage to the coffee plants. She would soon be joined by her daughter Rajeshwari to help manage the farm operations and, in the process, make Madhu Agro Plantation the only women-run coffee farm in the region with a workforce comprising majorly of women. The unbridled enthusiasm of the mother-daughter duo has seen this plantation embrace varietal segregation and innovative post-harvest processing techniques to produce a bouquet of specialty coffees.
In 2021, the coffees from the plantation earned appreciation in the Indian specialty market with the specialty lots offered by Blue Tokai, Kapi Kottai and Assava Coffee. 2022 is gearing up to be another good year with some of its coffees making their way to the US and UK markets alongside a slew of domestic coffee roasters. Madhu Agro Plantation’s journey into the world of specialty coffee has well and truly begun!
